My 9 yr old son has recently developed an odd tick.

Recently my 9 year old son has developed a strange.. well tick I guess is what you would call it. It just started happening about a month ago. About every 10 to 30 seconds (sometimes even more then that) he waves his hand in front of his nose. It kind of reminds me of someone showing that they smell something bad. He does it quickly and only for a second but it's very repetitive. I ask him why he does it and he tells me he doesn't know and sometimes he doesn't even realize he's doing it. Should I be worried about this and talk to his doctor or is it something he will grow out of?

Its possible it might be anxiety related.  Certainly talk to his teacher to see if it also is going on there.  Might also ask her how he is doing at school.  And yes, if it is happening in both places, then I certainly would talk to his doctor as it is a bit unusual.   Many times, a motion like that can be replaced with something like a worry stone.

No medication and his teacher hasn't said anything to me about it. I was actually going to call her today and see if he was doing it at school too. Not sure if it is relevant but his younger brother is on adhd meds. He was never diagnosed with anything like that. Never had behavior problems of any sort straight A student. The only issue I really have is his inability to lose. He gets so upset. There has been a recent Chelan get in his life. My boys father just moved here. For the past 4 years he has been in another state. Rarely called, never saw them, and now suddenly he's down here and taking them every other weekend...

Is he on any medication of any kind?  Does his classroom teacher also notice this behavior?
