child won't eat.

My 4 yr.old just got over the flu. He started being sick 8 days ago. Since that day, he has only ate a couple of handfulls of popcorn, a pop-tart, and an ice cream cone. My doctor says he will eat when he's ready, but I'm starting to get worried. Should it take this long for his appetite to get back, he's already lost 5 pounds by not eating. Help.

My step daughter has refused to eat for the last 4 days, won't drink anything or eat anything.  No fever, jsut a runny nose and slight cough.
We can't figure out what to do.  She looks awful, very sick, but she won't listen to us about eating! She says she wants to eat and then refuses when we give it to her for one reason or another.
She hasn't gone to the bathroom in a day, hasn't had more than 2 crackers, and maybe a sip of Powerade in 4 days.  She just refuses!
What can I do??????????????????

Your son sounds totally normal, and it takes a few weeks to FULLY recover from the flu.  I wouldn't be concerned.  Maybe take him out to his favorite restaurant or prepare his 'favorite' meal.  As long as he remains hydrated, your safe.

If he is anything like my son, he will only eat when he truly feels hungry.  so as long as he is getting enough fluids in him don't worry.  I'm sure he will bounce back in a week or two.  If you are truly worried try giving a him pedisure drink or try something easy to eat such as scrambled eggs-easier on the throat if he had a sore one he may remember the food hurting his throat when he swallowed.

My four year old routinely loses 4-5 lbs when he's sick with a bad cold, it takes him a while to get his appitite back. Soon after he resumes eating he eats like crazy for a few days to compensate, although he doesn't always gain the weight back. For instance he was 46 lbs a week before Christmas, got sick, and has been well and eating for nearly a month now and still is 44 lbs. It's not unusual for young children, I wish I could do it LOL!
