Once one of the gals on the site posted a picture of her son's work on  their wall and someone else posted, "Please tell me that is chocolate brownie mix."  It wasn't.

Not entirely unusual but not totally usual either.  You might just talk to the pediatrician.  Age 5 seems a little late for this, and not all kids do it in the first place.

I have experienced this behaviour in young children and some older than the age of 5.

In my view, this is not normal behaviour.  When this happens when a young child has been clean for a long time, it is more than likely to be a psychological problem and there is likely to be underlying factor.

Young children are not able to express in words how they feel and this could be his way of showing that he is unhappy.

Do you have any other children in the family?
If so, this could be related to him feeling neglected and unloved and a form of attention seeking.   Make sure that that you give him lots of cuddles and tell him that you do love him.  Do this frequently.

Please note that I have not said that you do not show him love, it is how he perceives things.

Reinforce the fact that this is not acceptable what he has done and that if he wants to draw a picture he is to use crayons and paper.  If you trust that he will not write and scribble on walls and furniture (which some kids seem to do) you can leave these at easy reach should he wish to start to draw a picture.  Otherwise, you can tell him that he wants to draw, then he should tell you so that you can give him the "tools for the job".

Best wishes.
