My son wakes us up every night headbutting and we don't know what to do to stop him. Please we need help!!! We have him in speech therapy because he does not talk. And I don't know if that is helping. He is two and a half and no one will give us any answers. He is not autistic we had him checked for that. Just don't know what to do.

My son did this as well until he was about 3.5... he does, however have autism and was told is typical behavior.  You stated that your son is not autistic - our pediatrician told us our son was not, but I knew something was wrong so I went to several specialists and sure enough, sadly he has a mild form of autism.  PLEASE see a Developmental Pediatrician if you have not already... early intervention is best!  At 2.5 our son was making eye contact and playing as expected, but was not talking and hitting his head on his mattress.  Sensory issues are common with children with autism.  Because we pushed our Drs.  our now 4.5 year old is off to an intergrated pre-K and you cant tell him from the "normal" 4 year olds!

On reading the last post I think that trying a single Bed would be a good thing.

Hi, just wanting to let you know we were in the same situation with my middle son. He would headbutt the end of his cot in rythem for hours. My husband and I were really worried that he was hurting himself or that there was something wrong so we took him to see our family doc. He said that some babies do this to settle themselves off to sleep and he wouldnt do it if it hurt so we thought no more of it other than laying awake at night waiting for it to end. Anyway the results were that my sons eyes ended up turning at the age of two. He has to wear glasses and had to have surgery which was unsuccessful. Anyway he is now almost 7 with very bad eyesight and turned eyes. I really dont want to scare you but please place a bumper or something around his cot. Make sure he doesnt do any damage. Best of luck and it wont go on for ever. We found the headbutting stopped as soon as we put him into a single bed.

Is he headbutting in his own Bed?? If he is in his own crib pad the sides so he wont hurt himself, has he any tooth ache, any pain it could be he has a pain somewhere ask him, point to his mouth or ask him,if anything hurts its not hard to express pain.Get the Doc to check him out ,make sure there is no sore throat also, demand answers if they say they dont know or go somehwre else. Also does he do it during the day has he seen anyone else do this kids love to copy.
