Problems at school/home

My 8 year old daugther loves reading , writing and do well academically, except in math. She has problems socializing with other kids. Since she entered school , i noticed she didn't play a lot with other kids, isolating herself at the palyground. As grade 2 ended, she had lots of problems and was targeted by a small group of girls, that called her baby, wimpy, bossy, angry, etc. They whisper in front of her, laugh at her face and make fun of her. they don't like to play or being around her. She became very angry at home and school. She calls out the teacher a lot, she trhows little fits when she can't understand something and she has trouble following directions. At home, she doesn't show a lot of simpathy for her little brother and she laught at him when he gets hurt. I'm constantly talking to her, trying to reach her. Right now, she gets frustated when i talk to her, but never violent. She yells a lot at her brother and it makes me sad. Also, she has this bad habit of interrupting adults when they are talking, to talk about silly stuff. She has been told many times not to do it, but she says she forgets and keeps doing it anyway. I went to the principal at school to talk about her problems and she suggested some counselling next year. At home, everything is fine, my husband and i have a good relationship and her little brother is a happy little fellow. She gets anxious and impatient about almost anything we do, even happy themes like family vacation plans, for exemple. No matter what, seems like she is never happy and her self steem so low!
What is normal and not normal for a 8 year old behavior?! should i be this concerned?!

Yes I have. Her teacher and i are always talking and trying to minimize her frustration and anxiety. Everyday she writes in her agenda if her behavior was good or not, if not, then we discuss it at home. She does have a journal . She puts a few thougths into it, mostly happy thoughts. She's been writing a play about bullies and stuff.
It is not like she doesn't have any friends at all, but I feel that I have to push her sometimes, especially when we go to the beach and playgrounds.
I also forgot to mention that she has trouble since she was a baby staying asleep through the night. She slept in my room until last year, because she was scared of the dark, but somehow she grew out of it. If she doesn't wake up during the night, she wakes up very early, like 5:00 a.m. I don't think she gets enough rest at all. She sleeps about 8 to 9 hours a day...and never takes naps, even when she is overtired.
I just wonder if kids this age group go through this kind of problems and have somehow a similar behavior or if it is just my daughter. That is my biggest concern.

Have you talked to the teacher about the problems your daughter is having?  Also, does she have a diary or journal?  That could be very therapeutic for her and would give her a chance to release some frustrations elsewhere.
