Son will only go in potty at home.

For the past 1 1/2 months we've been potty training my now 3 yo son. At home he is wonderful. Wears big boy undies all throughout the day, and only has maybe 2 or 3 accidents a week, most of those only due to not getting to the potty in time. He still wears pullups for bedtime, which we are working on, but it's going along great. But we have a problem. He refuses to use the potty at school. He just throws temper tantrums the entire time the teacher tries to get him to go on the potty, and refuses to sit down and go pee. I don't understand it at all because he goes all by himself at home with no problems. Today I decided to try sending him in with "special" school big boy undies to see if that will motivate him, but I called the teacher to see how it is going adn he still refuses to use the potty and has gone through 2 pairs of undies and pants already.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what else we can do to help him use the potty at school? There are other children in his class who use the potty too, so it's not like he's the only one who has to use it? Thanks in advance!

Yeah!  He did it once yesturday . . . that is a begining.  The more he does it, the easier it will get.  He's on his way!

My kids are skinny minnys too.  Lots of things even including elastic waist bands on pants just slide down.  I wish I had that problem . . .lol

Anyway, hang in there because I think he'll get the hang of using that potty at school in no time now.  As his 3 year old friends move out too for the older (and potty trained!) class, he may get more and more motivated to be one of the big kids.

Good luck and take care!

LOL My son trys to go at home like daddy does(standing) and it is a huge mess as he can't aim at all, and usually he be excited about peeing in the potty and move all over the place, not fun for me as pee is all over the toilet but at least he's trying lol

Yes he uses the elastic waste pants, he has too because he's really thin(which i don't understand as he eats more than I do! lol) and the regular jeans will not fit around his waist lol

The teacher told me yesterday that he did go in the potty once while there, without a fight so we're making progress. I'm only worried about this because he just turned 3 and he can't move up into the actual 3 yo class until he is fully potty trained so he's still in the 2 yo class.

Hi,  I think what I would do is to back off for a little while.  Something about pressure with kids when we want them to use the potty has an opposite effect.  So I would maybe back off for a month and try again after that.  Also-----  you probably do this, but my boys go to school in pants with elastic waists.  Getting zippers and buttons and snaps on pants is tricky and at school it seems even harder.  My 4 year old AND almost 6 year old still wear athletic pants to school for that reason.  I know my older son can do them fine but I'm always worried he will wait to long to go and won't get it all undone in time and have an accident or won't be able to get it done back up properly . . .  so I just don't go there.  My 4 year old would definatley be a worry for that.

I think too that at home they obviously have a better comfort level.  I don't know what he uses at home, but we had a potty seat (the kind you slide on the toilet) and my kids started going by pulling everything off.  So some of their routines for going potty at home would be different than at school . . . so I think it is harder to transition in the begining.

Try not to worry-----  he'll get there and he sounds like he is doing pretty good.  By the way, I have one that is dry all night and wears underwear to bed and one who wears underjams and our pediatrician said if a child is a very sound sleeper that it is not unusual to have nighttime accidents  until around 7 or 8 (geez, I hope not . . .but it would be  within normal if one of my kids did).

So good luck-----  okay, lol though.  I've got two kids potty trained and one that I never thought it would happen.  But now I have an issue with my stand up guys (as in stand up to go . . .).  Aim is a bit off at times.  They try but if they have lots to get out, they have a hard time controling it.    Something moms of girls never experience those lucky dogs!
