Ugly Words

My 7 year old was diagnosed with adhd last year. we have not put him on medication and he's been doing great. he's had good grades and is no longer hyper. Up until about a month ago his grades started droping and I'm now getting complaints from the teachers as he is not finishing his assignments in class. I don't have this problem at home. I just got a phone call from the principal and he said a child told the teacher that my son was doing something and my son went ahead and to the child he was going to kill him. I'm sooo frustrated as I'm not sure if this was just a figure of speech for him or if this is a was of releasing his frustration or something. He is not capable of doing anything but now I'm worried about his behavior. Please help!

A IEP stands for Individual Education Plan. This is done with students who may have some sort disability. This may be intellectual or ADD/ADHD or a physical disability. The disability can be a wide variety of problems. For example, my son has a IEP done for his education plan because of his physical and intellectual disabilities. He also has been diagnosed with ADD. This IEP consists of a modified plan suited for your child's needs. When my son's IEP was done, there were many people involved in this meeting. The people involved were myself, the teacher who taught him at the time, the principal, the school board psychologist, and a few more people from the school board that I cannot remember their titles or names right now.  My son also had a school board psychological evaluation done. This is how we found out that he is intellectually disabled. I don't know if things are done differently where you are at, but I wouldn't think so. This is done to help your child get the best education that they can to their needs. My son is being taught general basic life skills right now as he is in grade 3, but as he gets older, his IEP can be modified to his specific needs at the time. I hope this helps you to receive the best help possible for your child. Good luck.

Kids with ADHD typically have problems with their "filters", they say and do things before they have a chance to think over the consequences.
Now might be a good time to ask for a study team to look into some of the problems he is having.  Getting a 504 or IEP might help him in school.
You also might want to buy and read,   "The ADD/ ADhD Answer book." , by Susan Ashley.

Yes, it is distressing to hear that.  My son who is five said something to the teacher about tearing down the school.  Of course, nowadays people react much stronger esp after events where kids actually did do crazy things.

Maybe he did not mean it, you can ask your son about it.  I have told my son not to say kill in teh school b/c people really overreact!

I would stay in close contact with the teacher and pay attn to other things in his school environment.  Is he getting along with others?

I know it's frustrating!!
