peculiar behavior of child while

We are trying desperately for last 2 years for our 48months old son to make him learn potty in the toilet. But he has somehow developed the habit of doing potty comfortably in pants when he is asleep or as well as when he is awake & playing or attending dance classes or cycling without reporting the same to us. Even after doing a good amount of potty, he sits comfortably on it & never complaints that he is wet or smelly feeling discomfort.

When we send him to toilet in the morning or before he sleeps to avoid such accidents, he ignores or gets reluctant to go telling that he feels no pressure. I false promises that he would surely go if he feels the urge & he sleeps in next 30minutes. Just after an hour we find that he has done it again. We wake him up & again cleaning and washing job starts.

We have done several counseling with him where promises to follow all our tips... implemented incentive plans for him & also implemented punishment plans but nothing has worked out so far.  He gets seldom bashing & thrashing as well from us....but still results are very discouraging.

In other matters he is a good & obedient boy. He is lovable, playful & very attractive to others. he is smart & his IQ level is high too. He is sensitive & finicky to dirty things. Potty in pant is the only issue. it a psychiatric issue ?

Thanks Annie for the suggestions. We can see some improvements these days... as his incentive plan is on work big time. He is keen to get more n more rewards on each good day... which is without potty in pants.

we would observe him for next 10 days more & then take a decision on seeing a doc.

It is probably a physical issue, a dysfunctional colon and lower intestine.  Please look up encopresis.  If the child is seemingly not aware the poop is coming out, that is probably what he has.  It is NOT within his control and you cannot shame him out of it or punish him out of it, doing so only makes things worse.  Please talk to his pediatrician about encopresis, and if the pediatrician does not know much about it (which is unfortunately rather common), ask to see a pediatric gastroenterologist.  It takes time and care to heal a colon that is not working, but it can be done.
