Leaking in the pants for a boy

My 5 (almost 6) year old son has never had dry underwear. He leaks during the day and has never had dry pants at night. The doctor says he is one of those types that needs to be reminded to go every couple hours during the day. The problem is that sometimes he doesn't even feel the urge, but I make him go, and there is a lot of urine.  He's not a big water drinker during the day so he's probably even dehydrated too.

We use a diaper at night b/c pull-ups would never hold all the urine. Yes, we cut down on drinks at night and get him up before we go to bed. Yes, he doesn't like to stop what he's doing during the day to go to the bathroom. It does help to remind him to go, but every day his underwear is wet and many times it leaks through to the jeans too.

Help? Do we need to take him to a specialist?

I dont have any advice to offer you but my 5 year old is like that as well. he pees on himself during the day and is not dry at night, we have to use diapers as well. We have to change his underware more than 5 times a day he seems to leak poo as well. He doesnt seem to be constipated because his poo when he does go is soft. the doctor says we should not make a deal of it he'll get over it in time. He has been evaluated and is fine.

At this age I would want to have him evaluated to make sure there are no physical problems, and also evaluated by a child behavorial specialist.  It's hard to imagine a child holding his urine this long, we all know how uncomfortable it can be.  I'm just another mom like yourself, but this would concern me.  I don't feel it's anything serious, but needs attention.  I'm sure more knowledgeable moms will jump on with some valuable advice. Take care.
