strange behavior

My grandson has since birth had daily episodes where he clenches his teeth and fists and shakes his head back and forth. It seems to be out out of frustration and only lasts a few seconds, then he is off doing whatever. There is no tantrum or anything to that nature and he doesn't seem upset. He is now 16 months old. I should tell you that he had tested positive to cocaine at birth. When he was first born we brought him to a neurologist on recomendation from the pediatrician after explaining this behavior. It was a little different in that he would clench his whole body. The neurologist basically laughed at us so we did not persue it.

He seems to be a very well adjusted child. We do not see any other signs of anything wrong with his development, actually he is very advanced. Our we worring over nothing?

I have been having the same problem with my son who is 3 now. He seemed to have this most of his life...I am not sure when it started, but it was in infancy. It is just like you said, he stiffens his whole body for about 5 seconds....and he shakes when he is doing it. His fists are clenched and he is standing there. He does not fall down he freezes first, then clenches his fists and stiffens his whole body and starts shaking...then it stops just a few seconds later and he seems fine otherwise. I can't tell if he does it more when he is excited or frustrated or what. I have been trying to research it....I have only come up with "hyperexplexia" so far....but I am still looking.
I hope this helps.

I'm sory to hear about him being tested for cocaine at birth. However i do not think this is connected as children of a young age do tend to have short bursts of excitment where they clench their fists and teeth. I know my cousin did this when she was small and my mother also said i did it. I shouldn't worry to much about it but a second opinion could also be considered.
Hope this helped :)

thats sad about the cocaine.  perhaps this will get better as he grows up more.  you shouldn't have let one doctor's view be the end of it.  i think you should go to another and tell them of his behavior and see from there
it's a good sign that he's developing normally otherwise.  best wishes
