Should I eat fruits when I am coughing?

Hi everyone, here's a quick question..

I believe that I caught a cold from my sister, she began coughing about 5 days ago and I just started 3 days ago.  I always eat fruits before bed, but my parents are now complaining about how eating fruits will make my coughing worse and are lecturing me on how stubborn I am on insisting that fruits will help me fight off the infection.  I have already removed citrus fruits from my diet, just in case the acid irritates my throat.  Please clarify this for us, thanks!
