When should I see my Doctor for a cough?

by jessep28, Feb 02, 2008 05:44PM
Hello:

I have had a rather deep, severe cough for approximately three weeks which followed the onset of a cold or flu.

The cough over the past couple weeks went from being a dry, deep, hacking, non-productive cough to a deep, hacking productive cough which is a good sign.

In terms of OTC medications, I was initially on a expectorant with a cough suppressant (Mucinex DM) on the direction of my Doctor until the cough started becoming productive then I went to a straight expectorant (Mucinex).

Considering the current longevity of the symptoms (almost 3 weeks), when should I consider being examined by my doctor?

I understand this cough is probably viral and it should be left to run its course. I don't want to waste my time or the doctors time.

Thanks for all your help.

If the cough doesn't get better and you have trouble breathing or you're wheezing, it could be bronchitis.  I had this, and I needed a strong antibiotic for it.  Why don't you call the doctor and tell him?
