have i got colitis or something else?

Hello,

For as long as i can remember I have had trouble with my bowels (ie since i was 15) I am now 27 and I have been experiencing more bowel symptoms for approx 18 months which have been more frequent (i.e weekly) over the past 6 months. These symtoms include:

1. Frequent daily bowel movement
2. Alternative periods of constipation
3. More frequent diarrhea
4. Lots of mucus mixed with my stools (on 1 occasion it was pure mucus!)
5. general fatigue/ tiredness for years
6. I have previously been anaemic
7. 2 occasions blood in stools
8. Abdominal pains before big bowel movement esp when diarrhea (it subsides once movement gone!)

I have just had a colonoscopy and told i have ulcers in the rectum. The doctor said the results were inconclusive as the symtoms didn't fit anything! however biopsies have been taken and he is testing for CMV and herpes! I told him i had only had anal sex 4 years ago on 1 occasion with my current partner who has never had any symptoms! i feel my symptoms relate more to colitis what do you think?

Any help would be much appreciated

Hi,
Blood in stools along with anemia always indicate organic problem. It may be due to colitis.
A repeat colonscopy with biospy by an experienced doctor would be ideal.

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2006 and my symptoms were similar to your symptoms.  You should get a second opinion.
