I was diagnosed with crohns 4 years ago. My first colonoscopy the Doc could just diagnose my illness. Knowing the symptoms and my Sister has crohns. Since then I have attempted 4 times to for a check up. I since take 8 tablets of mesasal a day as the first medication was sulphur based and I am allergic to sulphur. I take pred once in a blue moon with a bad flare up. I had surgery for removal of one anul fistula. I am yet to find someone, anyone in the same situation who cannot tolerate any prep as they are all sulphur based solutions. If anybody has any other information I would truly appreciate it.

Hi there,
i'm not in the same situation in terms of a sulphur allergy, but I'm experienced with alternative ways to treat IBD.  Most recently, i've been going for acupuncture for help with ulcerative colitis (i'm doing it WITH western medication).  While medication alone (Asacol and rowasa) hasn't been able to control symptoms, the acupuncture seems to help.  I've been feeling a lot better with it and recommend finding a Good acupuncturist.

There are other holistic therapies out there, but i haven't had the will power to follow through with any of them....  a couple of websites to check out:

http://www.colitis-crohns.com/
http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/

also go to the Ask A Doctor Colitis Forum on MedHelp and Dr. Kini may be able to give you an educated answer about specific medications to treat Crohns.

good luck

I have chrons and have no trouble with my meds.  However, my sisterin-law has chrons and uc and cannot take the usual meds.  There are times when she is so sick they have to give her lots of predisone which is what they usually have to keep her on for quite a while when she flares up.

If you are not getting the answers from the gastro dr that you need or at least he is not trying different things you need to seek another gastro dr experienced in chrons.

Often it is trial and error until they find what will work for you.

Have you tried remicade, it also helps to prevent the fistulas.

It is very improtant that you have confidence in your gastro dr.  If you don't then you need to find another.  With chrons you will be in contact with him/her often.

best of luck
