Medication gave me Colitis?

I stopped taking an antibiotic more than 11 days ago..and just recently I have started to develop severe symptoms of Colitis, irritated bowels..diarrhea with blood in it, fatigue, cramps, bloating...and urgency...

I read up a little more on the medication prescribed to me...and it says a rare side effect can be weeks after treatment a "colitis" type of infection..had I known this would happen I would have taken another medication.

Do I really need to see a doctor..or is this something that I can take care of myself with rest, and liquids and a mild diet?.... I dont have time to deal with this type of illness :(

In your body, you have good bacteria and bad bacteria.  When  you take antibiotics, sometimes it can cause your good bacteria to get overpopulated by the bad bacteria.  The bad bacteria is known as C-Difficle (c-diff).  That bad bacteria can cause diarrhea with blood and also have a urgency to go.  It also causes a funky odor and has mucus in the stool.  You really should see a doctor to get this under control.  They will more than likely put you on Metronidazle ( also known as flagyl),  Get this taken care of before it gets to serious.  I know from the experience because I have had c-diff.  I'm also a nursing student!  Good Luck and I hope this helps!

I would check your symptoms with your doctor. A GI specialist if can be arranged fast to see you is even better. I wouldn't mess around with Colitis type symptoms for too long. I would not take the symptoms lightly either and make sure your doc or GI specialist do all the necessary tests to make sure you don't have any complications down the road.

Take care!
