The GOP is trying to rig the electoral college

Mitt Romney Would Have Won Virginia Under The Electoral College Plan The GOP Legislature Is Trying To Implement

Virginia's Republican-controlled Legislature is moving to drastically change the way in which the state's Electoral College votes are allocated.

According to the Associated Press, a State Senate subcommittee voted to recommend a bill from state Sen. Bill Carrico, which would apportion Virginia's Electoral College votes by congressional district.

On top of that, the presidential candidate who wins the majority of the districts would win the two at-large electoral votes not tied to congressional districts.

Slate's Dave Weigel explains how that would have affected the 2012 election: Mitt Romney would have walked away with nine electoral votes from Virginia, while President Barack Obama would have won four. That's despite a 150,000 popular-vote advantage for Obama in the state.

Weigel writes:

Look at the map from 2012. Mitt Romney won the 1st (53%), 4th (50%), 5th (53%), 6th (59%), 7th (57%), 9th (63%), and 10th (50%) districts. Barack Obama won the four remaining districts -- the 2nd (50%), 3rd (79%), 8th (68%), and 11th (62%). Had the Carrico plan been in place in 2012, Mitt Romney would have won nine of Virginia's electoral votes, and Barack Obama would have won four -- even though Obama won the popular vote of the state by nearly 150,000 ballots, and four percentage points.

According to the AP, Carrico argues that the legislation is necessary to give rural areas — which tend to lean Republican — the right amount of influence in elections. Obama — the first Democratic candidate since Lyndon B. Johnson to win Virginia — swept to victory in the state in 2008 and 2012 based on support in cities and suburbs.

GOP officials are considering similar forms of legislation in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan that would end the practice of awarding all of a state's electors to the candidate who won the popular vote.

Democrats in those states' legislatures have challenged the move, calling it everything from "evil" to "election-rigging."

The idea has gained support from Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus.

"It's something that a lot of states that have been consistently blue that are fully controlled red ought to be looking at," Priebus told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

“The election process has NEVER been changed until the republicans started with the gerrymandering...”

You’ve got to be kidding me. Do you really think The Democrats are not guilty of gerrymandering?

I don't think anyone has a disagreement about the electoral college. Hopefully it will eliminated in a fair and sensible way one day.

The content of our discussions are rarely the true cause of our conflicts.

And I do just want to say this----  I do think Vance was talking about the electoral college flaws in his comments.  it's hard sometimes to get exactly what someone means from the internet.  And there is a definate downside to the electoral college that it seems we'd all be just fine if they did away with it but they must do it fairly by doing away with it in every state.  Then all our votes count and go into the numbers that elect someone or not.

I dont have any quotes. Darn it! I feel left out again!

I agree if every state eliminated the electoral college, I wouldn't mind either.

Faulkner, Blake, Shakespeare, they are all around us.  Their words live on through CE members . . .  it's a beautiful thing.

Personally, I love my own little addition to the quote contest but that is just me after this headache of a thread.

I think if every state went for eliminating the electoral college, that I wouldn't mind that.

But I gotta say, this is much more entertaining than agreeing all the time! :P

Oh I bet he signs too! Let the games begin. Or maybe they already have? I heard today on the news Panetta says women can be in the front lines of battle now. I could not believe my sensitive little ears! I bet that went over real good too!

Well, the vote would have been 20/20 if the vote had happened above board when the dear senator was present, so they just took advantage of him attending the inauguration to do their dirty little deed. Now what does it take to make this pass? The republican governors signature that said he thought it was underhanded. But do you want to take bets on him signing it into law or not? LOL, yeah!

I keep looking for the place where someone quoted Faulkner.  I guess she imagined it.

I never quote Faulkner - almost always William Blake.

Well yes, I think it's clear but I'm probably biased.
These types of actions suggest a very desperate party.

Hm.  New med help trick.  Put up quotes so you can say "but I NEVER called that person that . . ."  or "*I* never said that . . . it was Faulkner and Blake . . ."

clever.

You posting a link to "who's on first".....how does that help any?

That was meant as comic relief--about how communication can be insane.

I wasn't "wallowing" in anything...I was TRYING to have a rational discussion.
Actually I am aware that you are capable of having a rational discussion. Would love to engage with you in more of those.

Now, I too am done. :)
