Martina Navratilova Has Breast Cancer; Says She'll Be OK

Just found out the following about Martina...wishing her the best in dealing with her breast cancer:

April 7, 2010

By Mark Memmott

Tennis great Martina Navratilova has breast cancer, she confirmed this morning on ABC-TV's Good Morning America.

"I'm OK and I'll make a full recovery," Navratilova, 53, said. She had a lumpectomy in February. In May, she will start six weeks radiation.

"I have a very small chance of it coming back," Navratilova added. She's been diagnosed "with an aggressive form of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), considered the earliest form of breast cancer," ABC News says.

Be sure they follow that closely.  I once represented a party in a medical malpractice action where the patient dragged her heels on a 6 month follow-up mammogram.  She waited 2 extra months and by the time she went in her cancer had metastisized to her bones and brain.  It was a particularly aggressive type of tumor, but still - those two extra months may have been the difference between living and dying.  She suffered a lot before she died, and her two teenage children lost their mom.  Sad.

Seriously, get those mammograms.  Last October I went straight from a first screening to a biopsy in a week . . .  I had no idea.  NO cancer but am on a 6 month plan to make sure it isn't on its way.  I was not pleased to hear the new recommendations for women to not have a screening mammogram until age 50 as I believe early screening saves lives.  (possibly mine included.)

I wish her the luck as well.

Well, best of luck and best of health to her.  Six weeks of radiation will be difficult - it is a very harsh and painful treatment.

Ladies, I hope you are all having regular mammography.  Early detection is so important in breast cancer, so go get those mammies grammed!
