He was a Great Guy, RIP
LINCOLN, Neb. —Godfrey Brokenrope, police chief for Aurora, Neb. who was injured in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 80 earlier this week, has died.
A spokesperson at Bryan Medical Center West Campus in Lincoln confirmed Brokenrope passed away Saturday evening just after 6 p.m.
Brokenrope had been in critical condition.
He was flown to the hospital after the accident, which occurred about 5 p.m. Thursday on eastbound I-80 near Seward.
Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins said Brokenrope’s motorcycle couldn't stop in time to avoid slower traffic and crashed in the median.
The 50-year-old Brokenrope had been Aurora's police chief since 2006.
Jeff Rotherham of the River City chapter of the Iron Warriors Motorcycle Club said Brokenrope was a probationary member of the club and will be missed.
The club is a national non-profit organization composed of current and retired law enforcement officers and firefighters.
Rotherham said Brokenrope participated in their Adopt-a-Highway project, arraigned for state Sen. Annette Dubas to speak at the organization’s annual Nebraska Law Ride and provided assistance to other club members, according to club officials.
Brokenrope started his law enforcement career in the U.S. Army in the Military Police Corps in 1981.
