Hi.  I also know the feeling but I didn't want to put my mental illness onto her.  I thought that there could be another simple or rational explanation.
I think it is about forming bonds or attachments (or perhaps an inability to form them).
I disagree that confidence is all that is needed (but again it depends on the situation).
Usually what it seems to come back to is emotional regulation.  If we can control or manage our fears and anxieties we are better able to participate and engage with others.
For me I think self-consciousness and lack of trust made it hard for me to fit in.
Ultimately it comes back to how my personality is organized and psychotherapy helps a lot with that.

My advice would be to see a psychiatrist for an initial consultation then engage with a psychotherapist to work through the other issues.

I have been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (or bpd).  Feel free to research that to see if any of it sounds familiar.
I think one of the most distressing symptoms for me growing up was the not fitting in.  The inability to communicate and relate.
I think the doctor here prefers us to look at our issues as life symptoms.  That approach works too.  I would strongly encourage you to speak to a psychiatrist about this issue though.  Treatment can make a huge difference to our quality of life.

I know what she means,  for those of us like that she doesn't have to explain much at all,  she never knows what to say and everyone else is always forming bonds and making plans but her plans are contingent on an individual she's latched on to.  Hard  to over come but a confidence booster is what she needs, that's all she needs, hard to find though... a strong significant other or a charismatic friend who pays alot of attention to you helps

The doctor may need more information in order to be able to offer advice.  Some more background information might be helpful.
What you feel could represent part of a mental illness or it may just be situational.

You have received already an excellent discussion...if you are not connecting with people, it is you who is not making the effort to bridge your part of the human gap between us all.....
