I have not had a prescription for it in over a year, and am desperately trying to get off it but if i go to long with out it I get nausea, head ache, demencia, its really terrible and i had no idea that this would happen when i ran out. Hi you could certainly wean the way suggested by Dr Gould but that way is very fast and may give you withdrawal symptoms. One of the best ways to avoid them is to taper very slowly like reducing the Xanax by a 1/2 a 0.25 mg tablet(0.125 mg) every week right till the end which may take you a long time but is effective and was suggested by my Psychiatrist.I was on 1.5 mg and have come down to 1.25 mg and will take me 10 weeks to stop the Xanax.

You are lucky you didn't hurt yourself badly in that accident...seizures are the direct result of going off the medication too quickly....I suggest you go to your family doctor, explain the situation, and ask for enough of a prescription to allow you to wean yourself...it will take three to four weeks.....first week, lowest dose daily...probably 1 mg or so; next week, same dose every other day; third week, every third day..; fourth week, the same, then stop but ask doctor to cover you for a week with anti seizure medication.
