How did he get hooked on xanax? Do you know how much he took. I was addicted too. I was perscribed them but was taking them incorrectly. Somehow, miraculously, I was able to  get off them on my own, but it was not without extreme feelings of despair and belief that I would never be the same person again, that it had ruined me. This wears off once one starts feeling empowered again.  It is a mental process

Definitely worse case scenario.   He's in detox, not having a lobotomy.

It sounds like it could be a reaction due to withdrawing.  I expect it makes a person feel extremely vulnerable.

As he goes through the detox program I expect, if anything, his memory would improve.

I expect when he made that comment he believed it to be true.  I would have thought there would have been some reassurance from staff.
As a family member do you have access to support from the service?  Are you able to have questions answered about the process he's going through?
Perhaps if the staff were aware of his perception they may be able to reassure and educate him.  It must be extremely distressing for him believing he won't remember anything.

I personally don't know anyone who has gone through detox.
I would suggest checking with the staff of this facility first.

I use to chat at www.realmentalhealth.com ages ago.  Someone there might have that information.
Also perhaps just trying an ordinary search on the net.

Try not to stress too much, he should be fine.

He said it is likely he will have no memory of who I am and will have to be taught everything, I don't know if he's saying this cause he's going through withdawl or it can really happen, he always looks for the worst case senario. So what do you think ? Do you know anyone who has been through this and might know the answer I was so stressed when he told me and he was crying.

No memory of the detox?  Possibly.  I expect he will have some memories though.

The doctor is better qualified to answer this question.

Your friend will not have a complete memory loss, and probably no loss at all..but, it is true that while he was on the  medication in excess doses he probably did have  memory losses..or spotty memories.
