I have short term memory and have had it most of my life, I cant work and i feel very ashamed because i cant remember directions or a number ive been told just after ive been told them. I was abused as a child, sexually, mentally and physically as a child. I have depression and have panic disorder.  Would that have somthing to do with my memory beeing so bad?

Yes, your experiences combined with your current high levelof internal tension can cause this problem....you need to have a peaceful base in order to concentrate...you should seek psychotherapy and some medication help .

Depression and anxiety disorders can affect memory.
A lack of concentration affects memory also.

Sometimes when people are exposed to overly traumatic experiences they can dissociate.  If a person is trying to block experiences it would perhaps make sense that they would be unable to recall all the information at that time.  When we are in survival mode our focus can become very limited.

Have you had this problem evaluated?

Have you tried to implement strategies to help you retain or retrieve information?

Don't feel ashamed, but do try to work towards improving it.  Working at something will strengthen neural pathways.

I feel for you.  I know how difficult this is.
