Mornings Are So Bad

I am so bad in the mornings but improve as the day goes on.  Is this usual?  Also I have not had any appetite for months and have lost a lot of weight.  I know I should eat properly to help myself but can't.  Any suggestions?  Have to get someone else to shop for me at present and live on yoghurts.

Hi,
Thanks for mentioning the experience of feeling bad when waking ...then better as day progresses.  I have same thing.  Thought is was just my circadian rhythm.  I can't sleep until about 2 or 3 am or later.  Prozac made this worse for me ...I was up all nite, then slept most of day:).
You must eat, Maddie.  Wish I could relate to that and offer helpful suggestion.  My problem is the opposite.  I eat pb and jelly sandwiches or whatever I get my hands on at nite.  Since gaining 50 lbs (from 115 to 166 or something like that), which was mostly caused by Effexor, I seem to use food as comfort. I know I need to get this under control, but my motivators have disappeared;).
Easy does it...but you know you need to give your body protein.  Maybe a drink would be easier that food?
Best love,
Ann

I have depression and mornings are the worse for me to. What I would suggest is just doing what relaxes you. Music is a great way to relax and get comfy. Savor over a warm drink and take things slow. Sometimes sugar alone helps me. Sugar may be bad for you but when i'm really stressed going to give a speech or something, it calms my nerves. Guess it makes up for what is loss when the body responds to stress. Kinda why depressed people eat ice cream, the sweetness makes up for the bitter feeling inside.

Same here. When my depression and anxiety are bad it takes a steam shovel to get me out of bed. It's not that I'm so tired, but I just want to sleep to escape.

As for appitite. I can not eat a bite when my depression is bad. I have no appitite at all and must force just a small amout of food down me just for a little energy.

Both very common for us depressed folks

The thing with this is to know that it will happen each day. So you know what it is, why it happens and that it will improve during the day.

Once you understand it's regular and a normal symptom then you can plan around it instead of worrying yourself sick about WHY.

This was really bad for me to, my anxiety would be sky high in the morns and improve over the day....my doc reckons it is where the serotion level in the brain is at it's lowest first thing in the morning and so makes people like us more prone to morning 'madness' as i put it..

The other thing is your body has gone all night without food and so it could also be that ur body's glucose level is lower so makes u feel worse.  Try to eat a good soild breakfast like porridage, oats release energy slowly over the hours and so help to keep glucose levels stable, which believe me helps a great deal.  I eat porriadge every morning.  It relaxes and fills me up nicely.  Make sure you drink plenty during the day so u don't feel dehydrated in the mornings as this can make ya also feel like cra*.

Hi maddie,

The feeling worse in the morning is normal for someone with depression. It's called diurnal mood variation (DMV) and simply means your mood varies in a daily pattern. Worse in the morning, better at night. Others have the reverse but it is the same thing, DMV.
