secondary/metastatis can post surgery

Hello - my father was dxed w/esophageal ca last yr and underwent surg last may. He was doing AWESOME & 4 mts ago had a scan done w/showed some "shadowing" - he was concerned but the doctors told him it was prob scar tissue. He had no symptoms until 2 wks ago- we now come to find the cancer is in his liver $ lungs.
Needless to say we are stunned. He was prepared to fight when he was feeling good and thought that if it came back the docs would catch it early.  My question is, being that my father wants to stay closer to home and not go back to the mayo clinic where he had the surgery, might the photo?? treatment for the lungs and the estrinol treatment for the liver be an option for him?
we are looking and reading everything we can get our hands onto to steer him in the best direction. He is not as strong as he was last month at all - he is anemic and sore (while last month he was up and driving etc!)  It came on so fast that we dont want to waste any time in treatment.  The oncologist stated that while they cannot get rid of the cancer entirely there is a chance to stop it where it is - would that be some sort of remission? and if so, it there a good chance that my father, if he responds to it, might feel partially himself in the future?
sorry for the babbling - just have a lot in my head right now -
thank you

Thank you for the info !

In regards to the 'cafe link : Actually Marc and my father talked prior to my father going to the mayo clinic -
him and his wife were great about sharing information *we knew NOTHING about this disease at the time*

I will definitely go through those links and any other inforamtion and/or guidance will always be appreciated!

PS - has anyone here had any experiences with the cancer treatment centers of america?
I checked their site and spoke to a rep and feel like I have a bit of hope now!
