I have pancrease failure at the age of thirty three. That was in 1983. In1987 i had a portal veina cava shunt due to cirrossis of the liver. THe liver has steadly decreased in funtion to the point of my taking 8 tbsp of Lactulose and 4 Neomycin tablets per day.  Several years ago my kidneys began to fail and I started preitoneal dialysis in october of1998. I am facing the fact that I will need a multi organ transplant including liver kidneys, and pancrease. could you recomend the best place in the U.S. to get this treatment?

I am on Plavix, 1 a day.
One doctor said it requires liver checkups, the other says no.

IHave been taking it for a month, and beginning to have low blood sugar attacks.

I am a  diabetic.

First your doctors are busy but demand thier time it is your sons life we are tlaking about.  If you need  make an appointment to consult with you about what is happening.  Tell them when you schedual you need extra time and go in with a list of questions.
Also ask if they can recomemnd some books or some one to talk with you maybe a nurse that would have more time.
If they are truely good doctors they will make the time to help you help your son.  Good luck don't be afraid to take thier time.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR QUICK RESPONSE TO MY QUESTION.  CAN YOU GIVE ME AN OVERVIEW OF WHAT HEPATIC ENCEPHALOPATHY IS?  I TAKE IT THAT THIS IS A NORMAL SYMPTOM OF PROGRESSING DISEASE.  HOW LONG CAN YOU HAVE THIS BEFORE THINGS GET OUT OF  CONTROL?  THE TREATMENT THAT YOU MENTIONED (LACTULOSE) IS  THIS A PRESCRIPTION OR SOMETHING YOU CAN GET OFF OF THE SHELF?  WE ARE DEALING WITH VERY  GOOD MEDICAL PERSONNEL ALTHOUGH THEY ARE SO BUSY THAT I FEEL THAT THEY ARE NOT TAKING THE TIME AND EXPLAINING THINGS TO US VERY WELL.

Dear mek,
Inability to sleep at night associated with sleeping during the day can be an early sign of hepatic encephalopathy (altered brain functionas a result of the liver disease). Confusion can also be associated with this condition.  Treatment may consist of lactulose, a sweet liquid that is used for hepatic encephalopathy.

You must be very careful about using any medications or natural therapies.  These compounds are often metabolized (broken down) by the liver.  Given the severe liver disease in your son, you should not take any remedy (even herbal) without checking with the liver doctor who is managing your son's care.
