Severe pain in my neck

Hi, I was diagnosed last January with acid reflux. I was put on Nexium and I felt much better.  However, within the last month, my neck has really started to hurt. I can't sleep.  It feels as if someone has put their hands around my neck and are choking me.  It's really scaring me.  I'm going to see an ENT this Tuesday but wanted some advise on what to do in the meantime.  I'm still taking the Nexium.  Can this be cancer?  I read some of the other articles and seem to be doing everything wrong. I didn't know I should be avoiding tomatoes and garlic, and tea.  I did know that soda and alcohol are bad, but my old ENT didn't even tell me to avoid those.  I'm seeing the new ENT Tuesday.

Thanks for your help.

Katherine

Without examination, I cannot say for sure.  The cause can include a neck strain or spasm, as well as cervical disc issues - depending on where the pain is.

If you feel that someone is choking you, the ENT evaluation is appropriate.  A laryngoscopy can be done to ensure there is no constriction of the vocal cords or swelling in the oropharynx.

Regarding cancer - it would be possible but unlikely.  The ENT should be evaluating for any throat or mouth cancer during the initial visit.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

if you are not having at least 2 bowell movements a day then reflux can result.  Take fiber daily like psyllium husks 500mg with lots of water a couple times a day.  Eat smaller meals more often.  NO POP or caffiene.  Eat a very healthy diet that is full of vegetables (preferrably raw).  Your diet has the most to do with this reflux.  Do not eat or drink within 2 yours of going to bed except maybe a bit of water.  Avoid wheat products for a while.  If wheat avoidance helps, continue it.
