Sulphuric/ Eggy burps and stomach cramps

Hello!
I have had an extensive workup for stomach pain 2 months ago.  Had my gallbladder removed in 1999.  My pancreas/stomach CT scan was negative. Gastric emptying scan showed slightly slow motility. Upper GI showed some "narrowing" of the pylorus, but no other pathology.  I have been on prilosec BID for 3 years, for GERD, and lipitor for cholesterol. However, I get bouts of severe stomach distress that presents as eggy, foul-tasting burping, then stomach cramping, bloating and nausea.  It is pretty debilitating for a whole day, and makes me feel horrible. Bentyl doesn't help much, nor does Gaviscon. Does anyone have an idea what is causing this?? Is it the pylorus, or lactose intolerance...something totally different that my doctor and I are missing?  I'd appreciate some input on this, as I actually am missing work because of it.  Thanks so much!    Kim

Well, this is the first time that I'm writing but here goes nothing. I don't exactly know if I fit into this sulphuric burbs category, but I'm affected by a similar symptom. I'm a healthy, fit, 22 year old male who has never really had any serious medical conditions. However, sometimes it seems that I pass sulphuric/ literally flatulent odors that seem to originate in my stomach and are then exhaled. This usually happens 30mins-1hr after I eat or if I don't eat for several hours, and is extremely embarrassing. It's not really severe but it's destroying me mentally and emotionally. I'm disgusted with myself and it's come to the point that I'm afraid to be alone with other people in case I should pass that offensive sulphuric odor again. The problem with the odor is that 75% of the time I don't notice it myself (others do unfortunately).
At first I thought I was lactose intolerant because it is worst when I eat yoghurt and various dairy products. However, various other foods seem to cause this odor as well (i.e. beer, bread, red meat, spicy foods) Frankly I've given up all my favorite foods for vegetables but I still suffer from these digestive odors. If I eat vegetables the odor will be less sulphuric, but still offensive. I don't suffer from extreme flatulence or stomach pains either.
I went to several docs. but they don't really take me too seriously, since it's not a serious medical condition. One doctor gave me some anti-fungal medicine which didn't help. I am guessing that there is something wrong with my intestines, and that these odors travel up the bloodstream and are exhaled out my lungs.
Frankly, I'm clueless on how to stop these odors. I guess the only solution would be to wear a gas mask, or to become a hermit and move to some cave in the desert.

Kyle,
Hello!
I understand how frustrating this must be for you.  I would suggest you keep a log of when the incidences happen, and bring it to your doc.  Perhaps he will refer you to a gastroenterologist, or do it yourself!  Even though this problem may not be serious in and of itself, it sounds like SOMETHING is going on, and it should be followed up.  Good luck and please write back and let us know how you are doing.

My son is 13yrs. old and has been suffering from the burps, constipation, severe stomach bloating and vomiting up bile.  To make a long story short, after treatment with a particulary harsh antibiotic he was becoming ill. The doctor made no connection between the meds. and his nausea.  He was in the hospital on 2 different occasions with severe pain and was subjected to many tests, endoscopy included.  The results were all negative.  I was at my wits end at what to do and we were having difficulty relating this to any particular food.  Even so, I decided to take him completely off dairy, this includes any baked in products etc. It took 4 days of 100% lactose free to see any results, but overnight, he felt great and is doing great ever since.  He is still unable to drink milk or have ice cream even with his lactaid pills, but he has his pills with every meal and snack and he is doing great.  It is still frustrating to be lactose intolerant after 13 healthy years, but this is much better than vomiting every day for 2 months! I hope this helps, it is definately worth a try.

Hi, I am writing from Sweden! I was very relieved to find out that there are other people with the "eggy-burp syndrome". I have never met anyone that recognizes my experience here.
I am almost 47 and had my first bout 20 years ago this autumn. That was a really severe one, that lasted for many hours since I tried eating when the first stomach cramps came on (I thought it was some kind of ordinary gastritis).(Since then I have learned not to eat, just drink mineral water(with gas) in small amounts, continously.)
Well, after that first attack I had about 4 or 5 that same year. I had both vomiting (with the same horrible smell/taste) and diarrhea (same with that), the start was always the disgusting burps. I remember the last attack was milder with no vomiting, just burping, nausea and diarrhea.
Then the problem was completely gone for about five years, when I  was in my second pregnancy. I had several severe attacks during the pregnancy, then it was gone. The same thing occured with my third pregnancy two years later. The attacks were terrible. I had one milder attack after the pregnancy, about 6 mo's after.
After that - nothing during 6 or 7 years! And suddenly, one autumn around three years ago, it came back. I think I had about three bouts that autumn, then it was gone again until this very night!
I have written these details because they puzzle me, and could be interesting when it comes to understanding the cause. Why these long periods without symptoms? Why the pregnancy connection, which I saw someone else had (I had nothing during my first pregnancy though)? I find the "research" from people on the forum most interesting. I have been thinking in about the same tracks. One of them is the slowered motility, which is well-known during pregnancy. The pyloric smasm sounds really interesting! But why would this occur for some months, then disappear for years? Perhaps there is some explanation.
I have never sought medical advice for this. Probably because mostly, I have been free of it, and that the time development has made me think it should not be anything really serious (hope I'm right there). But each time the problems recur I decide I will try to find a specialist...
I will be pleased to hear from anyone about this!
Best wishes to all,
Annakarin
