Long Term Cronic Diarrhea

Hello,   In march 2000 I had  to have my right leg amputated following an RTA.  Two months later I became ill with cronic watery diarrhea leading to a 6 week stay in hospital.  There thay completed all the standard test ie; colonoscopy, sygmoid etc.  the syptoms went on and I had to go back into hospital again 8 months later with dehydration etc, which ment staying in 7 weeks and then being transfered to another hospital for a further 2 weeks.

The Dr thinks the problem could be one of a secretion overload.  This I have never heard of.  I was given sandostatin injections which were then replaced by ondansatron tablets.  This has slowed the diarrhea down but I now have a swelling in my abdoman and a lot of pain when I move around.  I also bleed pase mucas and become very dissy when I go to the toilet.

On my last visit to the hospital I was told that the problem was down to the morphine which I take for pain.  I take a large daily dose but I thought that It normally constipates and not the other way.  I no longer no what to do next and I feel the Doctors don't either, I feel I am getting nowhere.

Any ideas or advice would be great as I am now feeling very ill and down in the dumps.

Regards.
JP

There is another web site that a Doctor visits and answers questions. It is www.webmd.com
Seems to be an OK site. You need to address the post to the Dr directly to get an answer from him.
Good Luck, I hope he can help you find answers. I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for your reply.  The MS is taken not just for my limb but also the swelling in my abdoman and other problems.  I also use gabapentin which you mention.  Until my last medical appiontment the MS was ruled out by 2 Dr as being the cause of the problem, so this is why I no longer now what to do next.

The use of the injections and ondansatron has however slowed things down but not solved the problem.

Thankyou.

I just did a quick check on google for you, MS contin has a common side effect of constipation, but a rare side effect of diahrrea. Other drugs to treat phantom pain include nuerontin and tricyclic antidepressants. I don't have an amputation, but I do have nerve pain in my feet and the nuerontin, immiprimine combination work somewhat. Hope you get this under control.
