Sphincter of Oddie Surgery

Doctor suggests cutting Sphincter of Oddie to ELIMINATE acute pancreatitis.  How successful will this be?  Doctor mentioned I could go into pancreatitis -- or could not.  If this won't eliminate pancreatitis, what other recourse do I have?  Diet?  low fat - high carbohydrates?  Thanks for your help.

I have had 3 sphincterotomies, and still suffer with pain, diarehha, I was recently placed on Elavil for pain modulation (very low dose).  I agree that a low-fat diet does really help lessen the symptoms, wish there was a "cure".

Hi,
I have had this done.  It did send me into an extremly harsh pancreatic attack.  According to my doctor at Stanford Univercity, this will not prevent an attack from happening.  But can make it happen less frequently and can be less severe.  But nothing is gauranteed.
Wish i could tell you different.  Stick to your low-fat diet.  No more than 25 grams of fat a day.  No oils, butters. I drink fat free milk, eat 2% cheeses...things like that.
Good luck to you.
