Does your dog know his name?

I took my own advice and wrote a Health Page for the Dogs Community.  This page describes an exercise to help you teach your dog his name so that he will respond to you immediately every time he hears it.  I hope it proves helpful for new dog owners as well as experienced owners.

To access the Health Pages, click on the Health Pages link in the top right area of the forum.  Take a few minutes to write your own page and share your dog wisdom too!  :-)

Great article!

All our dogs (except Steve the Puppy) know their names, and all our variations of their names.  Often, Jefferson is Jeff, Jeffy, Jiffy, or Jiff.  He knows them all.  Jake is known as Jacob, Jakadoodledoo, JakeyWakey, and he answers to them.  Ben is simply Ben, although he has been known to answer to Jim,

I'll have to work on Steve.

Thanks peek!  I just changed the font size to a larger one.  Didn't realize it was so tiny that I need my cheaters to read it.  LOL!

I just read your article and will probably have to re-read it because I'm so tired.

Our dogs not only know their names, they know their nicknames.  That doesn't mean they listen unless there is something in it for them  = (

One thing I've learned is that they learn things like "treat treat" or "no no" a lot quicker than just saying "treat" or "no".   Maybe it's just my dogs  lol

Yes. Definitely.  Even if when I say, "want your eyedrops" .. well, her whole face burries into the floor and ears go down to the ground ..  C~

Bianca will answer to her name for a treat. She'll also respond to Bee, Chubby Bee, and Chul-bee-bee (a Chinese nickname that means stinky baby). Her sister, Sorcha, however, doesn't seem to know her name. She comes every time we call Bianca. She must think that her name is both Sorcha and Bianca.

Every other dog I've been around responds to treats.  Except our Dalmation who I swear is ADHD.  How weird is that?!  No Milk Bones or Snausages for him.  Oh nooo....  Doc has to have cheese or forget it.  It made training a bit difficult until I figured out he was a cheese hound, but even then I'm pretty sure he would prefer a live squirrel or possum as a training aid.  :-)

Well, this comment will feel like I am bragging....my dogs knows their names, nicknames, you wanted to go outside, you want to come inside, its time for night night, get in the bed, be still, stop, no, goodie, you wanna dance, you wanna get in the truck, lets go bye bye, come, stay, lets sing (howling), stop barking, no bite, and when in trouble,,,,,I tell get under the bed, you're bad, thats the time out place...plus, who knows what else...oh yea, lets get our coats on for winter, no barking, shush, and who loves Momma......you wanna take a bath...etc...I don't give much treats, my way of treats if if I have been away for a time period, they get a small bite of something out of frig, and if they are really good, I will hand feed hard dog food, thats the treat....
Oh yea, they know what BAD DOG means too, they in trouble...
