My dog poops too much

My mom says she is getting sick of walking our 9 yr old beagle because he poops too much. She thinks it is ever since we started him on Wellness Core (dry), but that is a good quality food and much better than the purina dog chow we gave him before.

We feed him one cup twice a day, usually nothing else, no treats. We walk him 3 times a day, and he poops 2/3 times EACH WALK. That's 9 poops a day!!

I guess it's a good thing because beagles tend to get overweight easily and he is at a healthy weight..

Hi, thanks for this reply. I have looked for low residue dog foods and I'm about to change my dog's food but I'm wondering, will my dog be more hungry on a low residue dog food?

What should the protein level in each meal be? He is a beagle, 9 years old, not too active.

Thank you

It IS odd for a dog on Wellness food to poop that much.  Wellness is a high quality food and highly digestible, so dogs are able to utilize much more of it as compared to, say, Kibbles and Bits.

I would suggest putting your dog on a low residue diet.  Low residue diets are designed to be almost completely digested so that the amount of stool is as low as possible.  You can do this in a couple of ways.  You can home-cook for him, which is probably the best way to ensure low residue, or you can purchase a prepared dog food that is designed for low residue.

However you decide to attack the problem, corn is one thing that you want to avoid in his diet.  Corn is very poorly digested in both dogs AND humans so avoid prepared foods that contain corn and leave it out if you are home cooking.   Avoid prepared foods with chicken and chicken by-products because the quality varies wildly and as such can cause wild variations in how much of it is digested,

I would do a Google search of "Low Residue Dog Foods" or, if you decide to home cook, a search of "Low Residue Dog Food Recipes".  These two searches should give you plenty to go on whether you decide to purchase a ready-made food or go the do-it-yourself route.
