Brownish lump in throat (and severe pain)

my throat has been hurting pretty badly (on a scale of one to 10 it averages around a 7, give or take a few hours during the day) for the past week, as well as one side of my glands is severly swollen. The doctor also said that the glands are putting pressure on my ear drum so that is hurting somewhat as well.

I went to a doctor on Monday who did a strep test - which came back negative. I have not heard whether or not my culture test was positive or negative, but from what they said no news is good news.

the doctor told me to just take a decongestant and motrin to help the swelling. I've been religiously taking motrin and sudafed PE since Monday, but nothing has changed. In fact, I think it's gotten worse. When I look at my throat in the mirror I see a brownish lump (of mucus I assume) lodged against my left side of my throat right next to my tonsils.

Any idea what this could be? I'm still in pain and I want to get better.
