Caloric Test Ear Damage

Caloric Test Ear Damage

I just had a caloric test dont to try and pin point why i have been suffering from vertigo for 9 months, the doctor tells me i have damage to might right ear and that this was caused by a virus, and it wil never repair , and im stuck with this for the rest of my life.  is this true ???

if not caused by a virus what else could have caused the nerve damage,  and how accurate are these tests , i have heard that that can be 80 % accurate , and this doesnt explain all my other symptoms

fatigue
drunk feeling
headaches
blocked sinuses ( green discharge)
back pain under right shoulder blade
pimples all over my back like a rash
bad skin flaking
severe dandruff
bad memory

could it be candida causing all these problems ??

I assume you had an ENG done, not just the caloric portion. Normally you have a battery of test done, approx 5 or so, and the caloric test is usually saved for last. There are portions within the ENG testing that are less accurate than others. The caloric happens to be one of the most, if not the most accurate portion. The reason being is there is little subjectivity involved.

That said. You were not too clear on what is going on here. I think what you meant to say is that you have a unilateral sensory neural hearing loss, probably sudden onset.  Most of these types of losses are coupled with vertig. He probably ordered the test due to you complaints of vertigo in attemt to rule out some things.

Now, depending how long this issue has been going on.... yes the damage is forever. Typically a person needs to be medicated within 2 weeks after onset...  if not, the damage is in most cases, forever. The vertigo usually resolves itself, but that does not mean that the vestibular system has healed. No the body has other back up mechanisms that kick in to help out with the weak vestibular system.

If not caused by a virus? Popular theory is, it is caused by a virus. If not by a virus then a vascular accident, or even a benign tumor. The ENG test is one of the tests designed to help rule out a tumor. No the overall test batter is only 40% accurate. Which means you have better luck tossing a coin. If that unerves you, ask for an MRI.
