Child with chronic sinus infections

Hi I have a 4-year-old that has had chronic sinus infections since February...He will have a sinus infection, do a round of anitibiotics and be better for about 2 weeks, then starts all over again. Antibiotic, better for 2 weeks, sinus infection again.  Two weeks after one of the last antibiotic rounds, I took him to an allergist who tested him. He is allergic to a ton of trees, grasses, weeds, molds as well as the dust mites. He is on antihistamines. The allergist got a sinus x-ray and it showed a pretty yucky sinus infection. Once again, a round of Omnicef for 14 days made him better, but when I took him back for recheck and repeat x-ray, it showed he still had a mild sinus infection on the left side...So what is happening is the antibiotics have been getting him better, but not all the way, so it just comes right back, even if we keep him on antibiotics for 2-3 weeks at a time. He is set up to start allergy injections next week. The allergist gave him another round of Omnicef, but I cannot decide whether I want to do yet another round. If anyone here, doctor or parent, has experience with this sort of thing, any advice would be appreciated. Are the allergy shots likely to help stop this cycle of sinus infections for my son?

Hi, thanks for the reply. It really looks like he is just allergic to everything. I had alot of trouble as a child with sinus infections myself. I eventually grew out of it by the time I was an adult. We are going to do the shots for a bit to see if they help. Since he is very young, I know he would probably grow out of some of the allergies anyway, but hoping to help him build some immunity over the winter. SInce he is not running fevers with the sinus infections and they dont keep him from daily activities, just make him a little less energetic and cause some headaches, I'm trying to avoid the cycles of antibiotics for now and save that for if he gets really ill. Although they havent checked for CF, they did check his immunoglobulins, CBC, CMP, and ANA. His immune system is okay. So, crossing my fingers that the shots help him.  Good luck with your son's surgery. Hope he feels better soon.

I have so been where you are at.  My baby who is now six, has gone through the exact same thing.  We have had three sinus surgeries and looks like we are headed to another one.  However, have they tested for CF?  This is a symptom of CF, luckily we don't have CF.  We have been to see a geneticist and we don't have the gene.  Good-luck and I'll pray for you
