Ear clicking noise.

For a few months now when I am using the phone and the other persons voice comes through a bit louder in the receiver (left ear) my opposite ear (the right) will click and click until its quiet. This is so strange to me. Why would the opposite ear click when the other hears loud sounds?

this is strange.. because i am experiencing this exact problem.. that's how i noticed mine at first.. was from the telephone.. and i heard popping/clicking/crackling noises in my left ear when i heard the persons voice through my right ear.. now a year later i am still left with this problem.. only it gets worse.. i am now noise sensitive.. people talking at high volumes.. loud noises.. now usually any sudden sounds tend to bother me.. i've learned to cope by having constant background noise such as a fan or a heater on.. I have seen the doctor.. and had my ears professionally cleaned.. it did not fixed the problem.. i guess i should go to an ENT.. as im only 19 years old.. i thought the issue would just resolve on its on.. because when it first started i almost had to listen for it.. but now.. it's gotten so bad it affects me everyday.. it's even gotten hard for me to listen to music because my hearing has become so sensitive.. noise tends to annoy me now.. ive even thought about buying an ear plug for my left ear.. I guess people not experiencing this problem could not know how annoying and how much this effects your daily life.. I'm not sure what to do.. doctors dont even know what im talking about when I tell them.. and I've learned to use the phone by using the ear that pops.. and turning the volume down low and holding the phone a little bit away from my ear.. it helps.. I would like to keep in contact with you.. so maybe we could find out what this is together. thanks.

Your english is fine! We must have some kind of nerve problem in our ears. I dont know. Noone seems to know so I just try to get used to the popcorn noise when it happens even though it is disturbing.

My right ear goes thru cyclical episodes about every 40 to 60 seconds. Nearly quiet for about 20 seconds, then a steady progression of increasing rapidity of clicks to a steady beat of very fast clicks (perhaps 6 to 8 persecond) for about 8 seconds - then suddenly stops abruptly. Then almost no clicks for some 20 seconds - then the same repetitive cycle begins again.
This has been the pattern for several months without stopping.  However, I recently was at a high pass in the Andes and upon descending I suddenly noticed upon reaching about 10,000 ft. that the clicking began to start again.  One does not notice the ending of clicks - only the sudden resumption of the clicks!
Cleaning the wax out of the ear did not help.  Does anyone have any help in analyzing the cause?

I too have suffered with this for a long time and am convinced it is due to the cell phone exposure that I have in my job.  In any case the condition is called Hyperacusis and it really does affect daily life.  I'm trying to go to the Hyperacusis clinic in Maryland for some relief, it looks hopeful.  It is sad that the ENT community isn't really very aware of this condition.  I found this link extremely helpful:

Hi all, i have had the same problem as you all discribe for the last 18 months and it has only got worse with time! The slightest sound to me is extremely loud and makes me go all dizzy and shakey (shaky),and the constant clicking is terrible to the point that i dont even have to move or talk and it is still clicking constantly. It has got so bad that i am unable to work and everyday i pray that i will wake up and feel better! I have been to the doctors numerous amounts of time and seen an ENT specialist who all just fob me off with pills and potions none of which have had any effect! I think that they think im mad lol! Any help or ideas would be much appreciated! my email address is
carla_borrow-***@**** many thanks

I wanted to update my situation in the hope it will help others that have Hyperacusis.  I did eventually go to the hyperacusis clinic in Baltimore and found it extremely helpful in understanding my situation.  At the end of the day they recomended pink noise exposure as the treatment.  Unfortunately I couldn't afford the noise generators they suggested but I did send for the pink noise CD that the hyperacusis network offers.  This has been pretty much a miracle for me.  Simply listening to this noise brought a very quick reduction in my symptoms and gradually I have gotten my tolerance to sound back to a reasonable level.  It is not 100% as this condition is caused by ear damage but it has made a huge difference in my life.  I can tolerate noise and am now not terrified of loud noises.  My kids yelling doesn't get to me and make me miserable for the rest of the night because of the pain.  I am a better Daddy and a much happier person.  I hope this helps someone out there looking for relief.  Tony

hi All !

I have been living with this problem for 10 months. It started when i was speaking on the cell phone and when there is a loud noise and it ended there was a sound strange sound similar to  like you can listen to your wrist watch when you put it very close to your ear , Click,  when the loud sound ends 'click' and some times when loud sound played it felt like my ear drum expands and contracts. my hearing is above average.

this happens only in left ear , and when i put Qtips in my left ear and when i take them out it clicks again . and when i put my fingure in right ear and when i take it out it out my left ear clicks again, this evens happens when i shake my right ear too . even when i listen to phone from right ear and noise gets loud and as soon as it stops my left ear clicks again .. it follows the pattern of the noise and is hear similar to the clicks or ear drum is moving  .

If my ear drum is not clicking i feel it moving like the sound you can make by softly touching the wooden table with your fingure tips .

I dun need an Ent m a pilot and i get medical checks each year and they are all fine .
but i need to get Rid of this problem.

i cannot discuss it with my doctors other wise my career can be in danger

nikogal2006 you told the website about the pink noise CD , will it help this ?

Thanks Every One and i know that there is a remedy for every thing..

You might want to google Microwave Auditory Effect.  You are probably sensitive to the frequency of radio or microwaves that your cell phone uses.  Do some experimentation to see if it is an audible sound, like try tape recording it.  If only you hear it then this effect might be the source.  Don't jump to the conclusion you are the victim of electronic harassment as some do.

Also, I think this effect is proof that cell phones do effect your brain because the sound is actually caused by the EM waves heating your brain and inner ear slightly and then when it cools and shrinks back you get the click.  It's fascinating science but I think it is going to prove to be a killer for business.

I have had this problem since kindergarden. I am now in ninth grade and still have this issue. I had an ear infection when I was little that may have something to do with it, but Im not sure. It randomly happens to me, and clicks when Im breathing both in and out. I tried cleaning out my ears (Q-Tips first (which you really arent supposed to do anyway) and then peroxide), which did not work. I also tried popping my ears by holding my nose and breath and pushing hard, adding pressure to my ears. That didnt work either. One of my best friend in first grade had the same problem, and we were talking about it and the other two kids in our group were lookig at us like we grew a second head, so obviously not everyone has this problem. I recently had surgery (NOT on my ears), and i have to go for a follow-up with the surgeon, so I think Im going to ask him about it. I dont know if he can help me or not, but if he can Ill be sure to share it with all of you!!!
