Fluid in ear post infection

Fluid in ear post infection

A little over two weeks ago I was diagnosed with an ear infection in my right ear. At the time I had pretty fierce pain in the ear and they put me on Amoxicillin and an antibiotic ear drop as well. After about a day, the pain went away but the clogged feeling persisted. I couldn't help but wrestle with the contradiction of having fluid in my ear which was causing the plugging, yet everyday I had to drop ten drops of the antibiotic drops in my ear essentially flooding it. Hmmm put more wet in to get rid of fluid. Odd.

The plugging continued and then last last week I began having massive congestion and began to have a low grade fever. I went back to the doctor. This time I was given Augmentin and Entex PSE for the congestion. The weekend was horrible. Total body aches, crazy coughing, and fevers constantly, but ultimately I got control of them with 800mg Motrin. The congestion appears to be getting worse and now the fluid in the ear appears to be moving. In other words if I lay on the side of the effected ear I can feel the fluid slush a bit and my hearing improves, but if I stand back up, I feel it slush back and again it plugs up leaving me again with a clogged, ringing, ear.

All this leads to me to a series of questions. Firstly, when I would get fluid in my ears as a kid, I would drop in some Swimmers Ear drops and all would be well. After all these other forms of treatment, why not try some dry up drops? Secondly, is the fact that I can now hear the slushing where as before I couldn't a sign of improvement or decline? Finally, I've read everything from two weeks to three months as to how long fluid can remain in an adult ear post infection; are their any other remedies to speed up this process? The not being able to hear well along with the crazy ringing is getting really old.

Many thanks to anyone that may have ideas as I'm very frustrated with the entire process and desperate for some good advice.

Swimmers ear is used to prevent/treat outer ear infections. Infections located in the outer ear canal.

You have an infection in the middle ear cavity. The fluid is located in the middle ear cavity, not the outer ear/ear canal.

The insertion/placement of a PET (tube) would alleviate the fluid within the canal. The infection should still be treated with anitbiotics.
