Outer ear infection during pregnancy

Hello,

I know that in pregnancy there are cases where you need to take medications if you have an infection, etc and some medications have been deemed safe for pregnancy. I am looking everywhere, and wondering why some systemic medications would be fine, but ear drops for outer ear infections are not safe for pregnancy? They are localized, therefore hardly absorbed into the system but still it seems they are not safe? I had an outer ear infection for 8 months with my last pregnancy, and seem to have a reoccurence this one (I am 8 weeks) My OB didn't want me to take anything with Hydrocortisone in it, but every single outer ear medication has it in it. It's not an awful infection, actually less symptomatic than last time, but is it bad to let an infection go untreated?

Hi,

I personally feel that there is no harm in using the topical ointment for a short period. You better get your ear examined with an ENT specialist. Also try using mild antibiotics like oral Amoxycillin and Neosporin - H ointment for local application, if it is a swimmer's ear. Avoid using ear buds/any other items to clean the ear. If any more doubts, you are welcome.

I'm not sure if it's bacterial or fungal, but here it's also known as swimmer's ear. It's not draining, just itching and the tiniest bit of flaking. Will these infections ever go away on their own, or do they need some sort of  ear drop with a corticosteriod? Are topical steriods harmful in pregnancy, or do they have little absorption?

I have been doing a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and isopropyl alcohol. Does this only prevent an ear infection and not treat one?
