I a 19 year old female and have noticed swollen tonsils for almost a year now. In Mid-August 2014 I had what my campus doctor told me was a viral infection, which tested negative for strep. I had a sore throat, hoarse voice, and was given nothing for it at the doctors and was told it would go down on its own. Three weeks later I returned to Campus Health, this time without any other symptoms than my red swollen tonsils and was told that this was still a result of my viral infection from weeks before and not to do anything about it.
I returned to my hometown and went to primecare on a weekend due to an unrelated sports injury and asked the doctor to look at my throat as well in October. He gave antibiotics to help with my swollen, red tonsils, which at this point, the left side was more swollen that the right side. I Was told it could be an abscess in the tonsil and was referred to an ENT who told me that there was nothing he could do about my throat and it should go down with time. I was offered steroids but the ENT said they probably will not do anything, so I opted not to take the steroid pills if they wouldn’t help.
Throughout the months at times I have noticed that it is difficult to swallow certain foods especially if they are dry, like breads or dry meat. My left tonsil continued to be larger than the right. When I went this time to my pediactric doctor I have had since I was a child, he looked at my throat and said if they affect my breathing then I ought to take the tonsils out, but if they don’t just hope they go down and that there was nothing he could do.
About a week ago, I have noticed my tonsils are both swollen and one appears to have deep pockets in it that food gets stuck in, and that I have developed a few bumps that appear in the back of my throat and seems to travel down the back of my throat. I am scheduled to go to my pediatric office again next week but am afraid they will tell me the same thing they told me before. I would appreciate any input that could help me and my doctor find out what is wrong with me, thank you for reading and for any help. Im ready to not have big swollen tonsils anymore and constantly worrying if something is wrong with me!
