What is up with crackling ears

Hey I just had my ear start doing the rice crispy in milk trick about 8 wks ago. No other apparent symptoms, has anyone else just had the crackling? It comes and goes no rhyme or reason. Kinda bugs me when trying to sleep but its a mild irratation.
