curette ear wax removal pain

By buddy1 | 5 hours

I had an ENT remove wax fr my ear with curette yesterday . he scooped out three times . Rhe first and third time were painless but the second time felt like a pin was stuck in my ear.
He said it can sometimes be painful. I read that it should not be painful. I had a hearing test immediately following and the audiologist said that nothing was punctured or perforated. I still feel a little discomfort today and felt a little pulsating/ throbbing last night . however i am deaf in that ear so I wouldn't know if it was ringing from the procedure .
is it normal to feel that kind of pain when the wax is removed?
doc said he did not even see a scratch , and if it gets worse in a week to come see him

Hello and hope you are doing well.

As your doctor did not clean this ear, it’s unlikely that any of the maneuvers done in the office could have caused the pain. This is more so as he rechecked your ears after the procedure. As both the ears are affected, it’s more likely that the pain could be due to Eustachian tube dysfunction from throat infection. Throat infection can cause inflammation around the Eustachian tube, which is the tube that runs from the back of the nose to the middle ear and is responsible for draining the middle ear of fluid.  If there is Eustachian tube dysfunction, fluid can remain in the middle ear and cause pain. This can also result in an infection. So, consult your doctor regarding this. In the meantime for pain relief you can use OTC Tylenol (acetaminophen).

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

Hello and hope you are doing well.

Sometimes if the cerumen is tightly packed, it could cause difficulty while removing and pain. There could also be mild abrasions which could cause the pain. Once the swelling and inflammation subside the pain should resolve. To ease ear pain, apply a warm washcloth or a heating pad set on low. You can use OTC Acetaminophen also for relief from pain. However, if the pain worsens or is there is discharge from the ear or if you develop fever consult your doctor to rule out an infection.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
