Sorry for all the typos! Damn iPad! :)
It's quite alarming seeing the mount of people that seem to ignore the (only) good advice fro those who are mentioning food intolerances. Yes, there are plenty of 'remedies', some work and some don't, but they are just band aids, masking the problem and not addressing the actual cause.
I have suffered from smelly ears as long as I can remember, combined with sebborheic dermatitis. When I was a child, the itchiness was so bad at times, and was often paired with extreme wa build up - sometimes black sticky and very foul smelling. Sorry to paint such a gross picture! After years or corticosteroid use, prescribed by short sited doctors, who also told me there is nothing I can do but calm down the symptoms, I decided to take things I to my own hands. After a lot of research and many visits to many different types of health professionals, I worked out I had yeast and dairy intolerances. The best advice i can give, is that never just seek the advice of one health professional. They don't always know the answer even if they think they do! Shop around, and work out what works for you, as everyone if different! Anyway, long story short, a 6 month elimination diet proved what I suspected about my food intolerances, and for at period I had no symptoms at all, and had moneyed for corticosteroids.
Now ask me about keeping with the diet, as that is a whole different story! Happy to share my experiences in more detail, including how to best find out what intolerances you have.
I just received my box of Zymox with hydrocortisone today. How many drops per ear have others used? Do you lay on your side put in the drops and let it drain into your ear for 1 2 or 5 min? How many days in a row do you use it until you discontinue? I am not asking how I should do this I am asking what has worked for others as a guideline. Thank you sooo much. My ears keep me up at night and early morning. They first drain and the liquid being expelled causes an intense itch. Mostly happens during sleep but also happens throughout the day. The liquid is a very small amount, no odor, clear liquid unless there is a little ear wax then there is a yellow tinge.
I've been following theses posts for nearly a year and have had some small improvement using Zymox to help control the incessant itchy wetness that occurs while sleeping or holding a phone to my ear.
Something I hadn't tried is witch hazel. I almost forgot I had a bottle and in desperation soaked a couple of cotton balls and stuck them in both ears. It stopped the itching immediately and with continued use has healed the skin in my ears. It hasn't stopped the periodic draining, but has lessened it by about 80%.
The type of witch hazel I'm using contains 14% alcohol, not enough to cause burning or irritation, but keeps the skin dry allowing it to heal.
What makes witch hazel so effective in treating eczema is the high concentration of tannins in the plant found naturally in the leaf and bark and extracted version of the witch hazel plant. These tannins promote healthy and new skin to form while treating irritating skin conditions. The tannins in witch hazel help skin proteins bond and create healthier and firmer skin, and a protection against the flakiness that eczema can cause.
Best of luck to all of you who suffer with this condition.
