Sore, tender nose for no apparent reason

2 days ago I woke up to a very sore, tender nose. It feels like I have been hit, but I haven't. I haven't run into anything either. Now it has a dull ache or throbbing. My sinuses seem to be fine, but it feels like my nose is getting worse, it's actually the skin that runs down the brdge of my nose that's in pain.  Please help!  thank you

So, I have started on my medications (2 antibiotics and an ointment) and tonight the swelling and pain has spread to the other side of my nose, I am really starting to freak out!

I went to the doctor today about my severely sore and swollen side of my nose.  He looked inside my nose and said it just looked a little inflamed, took a swab to check for staph infection/MRSA, put me on 2 antibiotics and some ointment.  Test results probably won't be back until Monday,  so I also have to stay home from work Friday.  He also said he didn't think it was, but it could be Shingles, but again, he said probably not and to let him know if I get a rash.

I just wanted to update my post from a couple of days ago. The swelling started to decrease about two days ago and the hurting also. Seems like this lasted about 5 days total and started to either respond to the medications or it had just ran its course. Either way, I was negative for staph and herpes Simplex. My PCP recommended that I go see an ENT since on Tuesday it was still requiring the 4 ibuprophen ever 4 hours. Then almost as fast as it began, this started to go away.

I guess this will remain one of lifes little mysteries. If anyone gets a solid diagnosis, I would be thrilled to know what this was!!

I read all the comments and decided to go to the Dr.  These were my symptoms. . . . tenderness in the cartlidge area, then traveled to the bone.  Swellling in the AM on bridge and under eyes, I guess the sinus area.  Occasionally some clear, thick mucus to blow out.  No redness or severe swelling like others said, but EXTREMELY sore to the touch and when touching it, I would get the worse headache behind my eyes an in my forehead.
My Dr. said there are usually two types of these.  One is redness, swelling over the bridge of the nose and under the eyes.  This is caused by staph or strep viruses.  Antibiotic needed.  The other is like mine, pain, some swelling and very tender and occasionally headaches cause by the pressure.  Mine could be a result of a virus or weather changes like cold, then warm, then cold again.  I live in NC.  So, he gave me a steriod pack to take and also an antibiotic IF I began having green/yellow discharge from my nose after 3-4 days.

So, I hope this helps anyone else.  I guess I would recommend going to the Dr. either way.  But, just wanted to let you know.  I can't believe no one has posted this info yet.

I live in the St. Louis area, the left upper side and bridge of my nose became swollen and painful yesterday and seems to be growing in area.  I don't really have any other symptoms.  I also thought that I must have been hit or ran into something and just don't remember it, but surely I would remember if I hurt myself this badly.  It hurts just to touch it, which is really bad since I wear glasses.  It also seems to almost throb at times, especially when I just put my head with my face facing down. I have never even heard of anything like this before

I too woke up last week (1/21/10) and blamed my husband for hitting me in the nose while we were sleeping. As the day wore on I wondered if it was some monster Zit working its way out from my core! My nose was hurting on  the right side and eventually spread over to my cheek and teeth. I went to the local clinic to see a Doc on 1/22/2010 as the pain was driving me nuts. It was  giving me pangs in my forhead. not a consistent pain, but more like throbbing but more sharp if that makes sense. The pain was almost perfectly half way across my nose although the bridge being the most tender. The doctor took some cultures to test for the herpes Simplex Virus as she felt the pain was nerver related and herpes will do that. she also cultured foor Staph. In talking with the nurse today, prelimary results show that there is nothing in there that shouldnt be growing in there! I am currently taking 4 200 mg of Ibuprohen every 4 hours for the swelling and the pain and a nasal ointment for the raw inside my nose and Keflex 500 mg 3 times a day. Once the ibuprophen starts to wear off, the pain starts again and while its not as bad...It will increase if I dont take the pills! Choice pain or destroy my organs and stomach.

Some of the other things that I wanted to note was that about a month prior to this, I suffered a week solid of nosebleeds every day from the same nostril that is now on the hurting side. Also the pain is the same as almost ALL ot the posts here. By the 22nd touching the TIP of my nose hurt, today...the bridge is hurting on both sides. Is anyone besides me wondering what is causing this? Is this some sort of mutant germ that is brewing in our nasal cavities?
Oh, by the way I am in Little Rock Arkansas.
