I wound up with a sore throat last Sunday after waiting in the local emergency room 4 hours for a family member to get some stiches. The guy in the next bed on the other side of the curtain was suspected of having strep (those emergency room curtains are thin). Anyway, my sore throat started just slightly while still in the ER, but was turning into something significant later on that evening, and I could tell I was in for it if I didn't do something quick. Normally, I'd use a 23mg zinc lozenge and a few grams of vit C dissolved in water in a situation like this, but instead rubbed a very small amount of Extra Strength Bengay around the outside of the nasal opening and about 1/2" below the eyes (using a thumb because they're least likely to be used to touch an eye in case I forget about having the Bengay on my finger). The ES Bengay (or Flexall) are one of the quick fixes I use for my dry sinus/ENS condition. It had its' usual affect, producing watery eyes, runny nose and loosening up the nose-throat dryness. With that and a cup of tea with a bit of peppermint added, the sore throat was knocked out within a couple hours and didn't return.
(Obviously, you have to be very carefull not to touch an eye or other sensitive area with something like Bengay on your finger, so again, rub it on with a thumb, and don't use the bathroom for a while.)
