Peyrones Disease

My partner has been diagnosed with Peyrones Disease by a local urologist.  It is now at the point where intercourse is almost impossible.  The local urologist did not know of any treatments.  Can you tell us if there is somewhere else we can turn?

Take a deep breath. I know it sounds scary, but Peyronie's is not a “no sex” sentence. Peyronie’s, a condition of uncertain cause, is characterized by a plaque, or hard lump, that forms on the penis. The plaque develops on the upper or lower side of the penis in layers containing erectile tissue. It begins as a localized inflammation and can develop into a hardened scar, which causes penile curvature.

It might make it less frightening if you refer to it as "Peyronie's Condition" rather than to think of it as a disease.

You don’t mention how severe your partner’s curvature is. For many men, a slight curvature doesn’t inhibit their enjoyment of p-v sex; however, for others, it can be nearly impossible. If the curvature is only slight, you can adjust accordingly, for instance, with shallow penetration, rather than deep thrusting that may be painful for him.

It is not uncommon for men with Peyronie's to feel depressed, withdraw from their sexual partners, and refuse to talk openly about their concerns. It might be beneficial for the two of you to see a therapist who specializes in sexual concerns so you can talk about these issues.

Now here’s some good news: It is estimated that approximately 20% of men who have Peyronie’s will have improvement or complete correction of their penile curvature within the first 12 months of their condition. Thus, as the plaque in Peyronie's disease may shrink or disappear without treatment, medical experts suggest waiting a full year before attempting any correction.

While you’re waiting, how about experimenting with other ways to be sexual? There are many ways you and your partner can experience pleasure together. I bet you can think of lots if you try! Good luck to you both. Dr. J
