Blocked tear duct

Hi, I am new to this site. I'm a 16 year old girl and since I was about 11 years old I've had intermittent watering in my right eye. I saw an optometrist who said it was most likely a blocked tear duct. I've had sinus CT scan to rule out sinusitis, tumors, etc and it came up clear. I've also had a nasal endoscopy done which found that my right nostril is narrower than my left. Could this have caused the blocked tear duct? Also, is there anything I can do to resolve this? The eye watering is very annoying and people always think I'm crying because I'll have tears running down my face. Thanks!

You're obviously a really smart kid, fast on the uptake, so, from your reading, you probably already have a pretty good idea of the likelihood that it's a tumor--after having watering eyes for five long years with no other related symptoms.

I know that it's hard to deal with an anxiety disorder, and kudos to you for accepting treatment for it.  But fretting about your eye symptoms without seeing a doc is like picking at a scab:  there's a weird satisfaction in the activity, but it does no good.

Yes I'm trying to stay off the Internet from now on. I have anxiety, which I am taking medication and seeing a counselor for, and I tend to jump to the worst conclusions. My mom is going to make me an appt, but I'll likely have to wait a few weeks to get in. I know nobody here can diagnose me, but I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance--given my age and the length of time I've had this issue (5 years), is it unlikely that it's a tumor?

I agree quit surfing the internet and thinking the worse. Have you parents help you make the connection with an ophthalmologist.

Oliv, no more internet searching at this point, OK?  You'll just be scaring yourself.

As Dr. Hagan said, now you need to go to another ophthalmologist and have your eyes looked at in person.

Okay thanks I think I will do that. I've just read that tearing in one eye can be due to an eye tumor? I've had my sinuses checked for tumors but never my eyes...is this a possibility? I'm starting to worry a bit now

I doubt you need surgery.  As I said I would get a second opinion from a different type of ophthalmologist

Thank you for replying. If it's not a blocked tear duct then I don't know what it is. I've tried treatment for dry eye which did not help at all. And the doctor eliminated allergies because they can't be unilateral. My eye will mostly water when my right nostril gets inflamed so I'm thinking they are related. Some days are worse than others. Will I need surgery to correct this?

Next step would be to see a oculoplastic surgeon. Their specialty is eyelids, tear ducts and orbits.  Find one near you at www.geteyesmart.org

A blocked tear duct usually causes watering, usually just one side, ALL the time not intermittently
