Cataract surgery after RD

I had RD with vitrectomy and gas bubble 9 weeks ago.  My bubble lasted 8 weeks.  I now have a large cataract.  I saw a cataract surgeon and he thinks it needs to be removed, but my retina surgeon says he sees fluid behind the retina, which the cataract surgeon is questioning because he says the cataract is so dense you can not see behind it.  The retina surgeon is now wanting to insert an oil bubble in my eye.  I am very confused.  Could you please give me some perspective? The cataract is causing about 1/2 of my vision to look brownish yellow and is very hard to see through.  I would appreciate your thoughts.

Go by what your retina surgeon says. Frankly they're better at evaluating the retina after RD than we non-retina surgeons.

Definitely go with the retinal surgeon.
If you do need another surgery for oil insertions, the retinal surgeon can either team up with your cataract surgeon, so you can get cataract removed and IOL implanted along with fixing the retina, or the retinal surgeon can perform a pars plana lensectomy and do the necessary retinal repair. The latter option will leave you aphakic (since retinal surgeons don't deal w/ IOLs), but after the retina has sufficiently healed you can go and get an IOL implanted.

I agree with Dr Hagan and Berrywoo...I also developed a cataract after RD surgery, and also had fluid behind the retina after the first surgery and had to have silicone oil in the eye.  The oil was removed after a few months, and my retinal surgeon took care of the cataract at that time as well.  (they fitted me for a lens before the oil came out).  I think my retinal surgeon deals with everything!  He is wonderful!  I don't know where you are located, but if you can go to Bascom Palmer in Miami, you will be very well taken care of!
