Corelation of Toric lens and eye glasses

My eye MD picked Alcon Toric IOL model SN6AT5 +15 D with +3.0 Diopters of Cylinder correction for my left eye. According to Alcon’s brochure

Lens model                                 SN6AT5
Cylinder Power
   IOL Plane                                  3.00 D
   Corneal Plane                            2.06 D
Recommended
Corneal Astigmatism                   2.00D and up
Correction Range

It seems to me SN6AT5 correct to 2.00D and up, it dose not have model for +3 Diopter exact correction.

My glasses prescription for my left eye was -150, -175x159, when eye was good.  This means -1.75 D for Astigmatism, +3D of cylinder correction may be over kill. Is it correct?

Hi Sally:

I asked same question as you asked Dr Hagan before. His answer was if you do not mind to wear glass, Monofocal IOL is the safest lens to implant. You do not have to worry about rotation if you implanted with monofocal IOL. I hope you did not rub your eye or lift heavy staff and put some strain on your operated eye. If you can not see well you better call your doctor right away. If IOL rotated after surgery or did not implanted at correct angle to begin with, Doctor can rotate it again to right spot. First week after surgery is the best time to do it. Do not wait too long since the scar tissue around the IOL will getting stronger and stronger as time goes by and getting more difficult to do secondary procedure.

Is it okay to get one iol toric and the other standand?  Would they work together?  The Alcon IQs.

I spoke too soon about my new toric.  I am still seeing a blurry 20/40 at plano.

My eye that hasn't been done yet has a refraction of -4.50   -1.00 x 10.  I am scheduled for a toric SN6AT4.   Since I don't mind wearing glasses, do you think it would make sense for me to request a standard Alcon Aspheric IQ in that eye, and have it corrected w/ the glasses instead of chancing the same results w/ another toric?

Thanks so much for your taking the time to answer questions~

hey there uxuh, I see that you wrote to me, this is such a great forum.

I could not be happier with the implant, I just feel so blessed and lucky.  It is indeed very scary and nerve wracking and I am glad to have one down (and only one to go)!  Vision is unbelievable with this toric.  I am still only on day 2, as I had the surgery at 1:15 pm on Thursday, it hasn't even been 48 hours!  I sure feel like I might be seeing 20/20 now.  I am seeing far sharper than I did w/ glasses (we seem to have similar prescriptions although I know everyone's astigmatism is different).  So you haven't had any surgery yet?  I was thinking you already had yours.  My R eye is scheduled for the # 4 toric, my measurements for that eye are similar to the L, but lower.

Hi, Dr. Hagan!
I am doing really well so far.  Now I am using a 1.5 reader for the computer!  I am on day 2 and am wondering if it's okay to take a shower now and wash hair?
Thanks for being there for all of us.

Hi Sally987:

How is your vision 3 days after surgery?  My surgery is scheduled late next month. Last time you mentioned that your vision was at 20/40, but that was one day after surgery. How about now, back to 20/20 as you planed? There is a fundamental problem for selecting an IOL, can not try on first. My approach was measure twice cut once. I went to first surgeon get first measurements and he recommended Alcon Toric IOL model T4. Then went to 2nd surgeon did the same thing and he suggested T5.  Then I went back to first ophthalmologist and asked him to rechecked the measurement using data from both sides and he did 7 sets measurement and throw out two sets of outliers and came up his second recommendation which is model SN6AT5 (Same us yours) 15 D  +3 Cyl. I wish you got the right IOL, I mean the one meet your goal. For my case, I believe both T4 and T5 will improve my vision dramatically. But one of them may make me wear glasses after implant which is defeating my purpose and wasting my $1000 for upgraded IOL.

By the way, I talked to my optometrist and she told me that eye glasses prescription has no direct correlation to IOL prescription.

I wish you satisfied with your implanted Toric IOL.

Went in for my day after surgery follow up today.  My one day old left IOL is set for plano.  And my vision test measured at a sort of blurry 20/40.  I was hoping that plano meant 20/20 but it doesn't necessarily.  Anyway, all in all, I got a good report, no infection, no horrible side effects, just a bit of a swollen top eyelid and blackeye.  I am using the new eye to type now, with 2.50 reading glasses.  I will be like Jodie and need progressives for near and intermediate.  My R eye is scheduled for 1 week later..this coming Thursday.

For those who haven't had surgery, try not to freak out.  When you take the patch off 4 hours after surgery, your eye will be dilated like a saucer. Of course, you can't see well through that thing.  My take home fact sheet said, at this time expect your vision to be tilted, blurry, etc, which it was.  Then there is all this vasoline goop on your eye. That eventually just wears out of your eye by the next morning.  You may need to dab it gingerly from the corner of your eye when you do your drops (you may want to ask your doctor, but that's what I did).  My instructions said I only needed to wear the eye protector on the first night (I may use it tonight too, to be on the safe side) instead of for a week.

I did not sleep well before the surgery.  In fact, the night before surgery, I could not sleep at all!  And then I was worried to death that no sleep would affect the outcome of my surgery.  I don't think it did.

When I said in another post that I thought I felt the 'stitches' in my eye last night, I meant the 'incision', because today I learned that there were no stitches~
The new eye makes things appear whiter than the R eye, not in a bad way.  It's nice.

So good luck everybody, and let us know what it is like for you.  I sure hope I can get some much needed sleep this week, before my next big day.

One new thing to report, if I turn my head to the right, I notice that the type is clearer through the L side (incision side).

At the doctor's office today, I asked for a copy of all my test results and calculations, and they were nice about doing that while I waited.

uxuh and Dr. Hagan,

I am really confused about the toric power calculations also.

had my L eye done this afternoon, and the stats card I received says SN6AT5

13.5 D

3..00 Cyl

length 13 mm

My May glasses prescription says sphere 7.25 and CYL 1.50.  Mine also seems like overkill..  (a previous glasses prescription from 2007 has CYL-1.75)

It's hard to tell my results yet.  Things are still blurry and I'm covering  L eye to type this.  I can feel the stitches.  I was going to take some tylenol tonight, I guess that's okay to do?

uxuh, how is your vision coming along now?  I can see starbursts on lights outside, but like I said, this is just my first night and I'm hoping that will improve.
