Half circle blind spot after vitrectomy with gas bubble

I had a vitrectomy about 3 weeks ago for a partial retinal detachment. 10 days prior I had laser treatment for a tear that got worse and so required surgery. I have an 8 weeks lasting gas bubble placed in that eye.

Right after surgery I had noticed a black half circle blind spot. Now it looks more like a gray half circle. It looks almost like a contact lens from a side view. When I close my eye I still see this shape in kind of la light neon green. After a while I don't think I notice it much when the eye is closed.

The bubble has gone down by 30%. But this half circle doesn't seem to have changed in size. I do think it does move around a bit. But I can't see through it.

My surgeon doesn't say much about it. He says the retina is well in place and seems to heal well. When talking on the phone to another doctor in that  office he said it could be a stimulation of the gas bubble against the retina. My surgeon said 'maybe' when I mentioned that but again doesn't say much about it or seemed to concerned.

This half circle isn't that small so I do hope it will disappear. Has anyone else experienced something like this?

When I had my vitrectomy/gas bubble I was told to come in immediatly if I noticed any more dark patches on the periphery of my vision.  I noticed a "blind" spot in my top peripheral vision within a couple of days and rushed back in.  Turns out it was the boundary between the liquid and the gas in my eye.  As the gas bubble shrank (so the boundary rose in my eye), I perceived the dark patch sinking.  At the end the tiny gas bubble looked black and appeared to jiggle around at the bottom of my eye.

Recovery from a vitrectomy, particularly with a gas bubble, is  weird.  You will perceive all kinds of effects.  I panicked more than once, but the docs kept telling me my retina was well attached, and they were right.

Think about it this way - you've already had cataract surgery in that eye, so that's one less thing to worry about!

Good luck.

Thanks Chazas. I'm sorry I don't have ability to pull up the discussion threads but they are there if you can locate them.

Thank you so much, Doctor Hagan. That already makes me feel better. I had tried the search function but didn't find much of people seeing things like a half circle or ellipse after vitrectomy. Maybe one or two mentioned it. But I will try the archive search. Thank you!

One more note, I have had cataract surgery in that eye three years earlier.

Use the search feature and archives and locate the many extended discussions by people with air or gas or oil in their eye after this type of surgery. It will help your understanding and make you feel better as many people report same observations. JCH MD
