1. Can I wear daily disposable contact lenses say, around 16 or so hours a day? I think I read somewhere that 12 hours was the recommended limit but that doesn't make sense to me since most people only sleep around 8 hrs a day and I would need to wear them the rest of the day.
2. My eyes are very myopic. An eye doctor recently checked my eyes as I need a new prescription and said the difference between my eyes was too great for an eyeglass prescription. He said they would make me dizzy. My left eye is currently -5.0 diopters and my right eye is -9.5 diopters. The prescription on my eyeglasses which I need to replace is -5 for the left eye and -7.5 for the right eye...so my right eye is getting worse. He also said i have a cataract in my right eye I may want to have removed.
Instead of having cataract surgery, would it be ok to wear daily disposable contacts in both eyes at my current myopic level?..will they make me dizzy as well? (I forgot to ask the eye doctor when I was there since I really didn't want contacts..but am now rethinking this). Thanks.
Daily disposable contact lenses are perfectly fine to wear 16 hours a day or even 24 hours (if you are awake that long) as long as you replace the lens after that time and DO NOT SLEEP IN THEM. (You cannot sleep in them because when your eyes are closed for extended periods the cornea gets less oxygen and the lens would block it, but they are fine to wear as long as you are awake.) The only reason they are "daily" is because they are thinner than monthly lenses and will not stand up to the manipulation required to clean them.
You can wear contacts until you feel that the cataract has impaired your vision in that eye to an intolerable level, which varies by individual. At that time, you will need cataract surgery and can get your eyes more balanced so you can wear glasses again.
