It is very helpful to what doctors would choose for themselves, since they have full knowledge.  I am a bit concerned where I read very few doctors would choose crystalens... So why so so many recommend to patients. If it's nor just for financial gain?  I would live to read Dr. O reasons fir choosing...

It sounds to me like your doctor's highest priority is his bank balance.  The Crystalens can be quite profitable for the surgeon.

Take the time to read the 2009 threads about the Crystalens HD.  This IOL usually provides a wider range of focus than monofocal IOLs.  However, even in cases with the best outcomes, most people with the Crystalens HD still need glasses for prolonged reading or seeing small print.  Some people complain about terrible problems with glare or dysphotopsia.  Others need glasses for almost all intermediate and near vision tasks.

Aspheric monofocal IOLs offer the best chance for a problem-free outcome.  They can be set for monovision (if you've been successful with monovision contact lenses) or modified monovision (either distance/intermediate vision or intermediate/near vision).  My friend who has distance vision in his dominant eye and intermediate in his non-dominant eye only needs glasses for prolonged reading or seeing small print (just like many people with the Crystalens HD).

But there is no right or wrong choice.  The two ophthalmologists who respond to posts on this forum would make different choices for their own vision.  Dr. Hagan has said that he would choose aspheric monofocal IOLs set for modified monovision (near/intermediate vision).  Dr. Oyakawa would chose the Crystalens HD.

Thanks for your comments. When I spoke to my Dr. he didn't put it in the quite same terms as you did. We discussed the monofocal lens where you should see well at far distances but I would need reading glasses. We discussed the Crystalens HD and he said  that I should be able to focus near, mid range and far.He told me the extra cost involved with the Crystalens and that was about it.In the conversation I told him I wanted "the best outcome possible" and that I would like to be able to focus near ,mid range and far.It was never dicussed in our conversation that to have the best problem free outcome to go with a monofocal lens. I am a financial advisor and I do a lot of reading. It would be great to see well up close and not have to wear reading glassed. However I think if I believed in order to get a problem free outcome I needed to go with a monofocal lens ;I think I would choose that. My limetd knowledge of this procedure at this time is that you only do it ounce .You put the lens in you want and your stuck with it.So you better make the right decision up front.

If your highest priority were to reduce your dependence on glasses (and you were not a candidate for monovision), then the Crystalens HD might be a good choice.  If your highest priority is good vision with a problem-free outcome and you can accept wearing glasses for some tasks, get aspheric monofocal IOLs.

I know your right and this is a personal decison.I know that we are all different and can have diffferent outcomes.I guess I just want to feel that this is a quality product without defects and that I have the best chance to be able to see well with this lense. Thank you for your response
